Information about the excursion
Driving 25-30 km south from Rimini, you can find yourself in the real Middle Ages. On a high hill you can see the powerful walls of the small town of Gradara. It seems that time has stopped here. The fortress walls and the castle have been preserved in their original form. The main tower, Mastin, rises above the town and the castle. It was in this castle, back in 1285, that a tragedy took place, as a result of which the jealous husband and lord of Pesaro, Giovanni Malatesta, killed two lovers – his beautiful wife and his own brother. This event could have gone unnoticed in history, if not for Dante. Being a contemporary of those events, he heard the story of the unhappy love of Paolo and Francesca from the lips of the girl’s father, Guido da Polenta, the Signor of Ravenna, who sheltered the disgraced poet after his expulsion from his native Florence. Dante immortalized the story of the lovers, placing them in the hell of his Divine Comedy…
In this same castle, two centuries later, Lucrezia Borgia, the daughter of the all-powerful Pope Alexander VI, lived for three years, married at the age of 14 to Giovanni Sforza for political reasons.
Friends, I invite you to visit Gradara and touch the history of the castle.
