Information about the excursion

Situated on an inaccessible mountain, Monte Feltro (modern San Leo) was first mentioned in 222 BC, when the Roman consul Marcus Claudius Marcellus defeated the Gauls in the valley of the Po River and killed their king in single combat, and donated his weapons and armor to the Temple of Jupiter on Mons Feretrius (Mount Thunderer).

Already in the 10th century, the city was renamed San Leo in honor of Leo of Dolmatia, a friend and companion of Saint Marino, who came to this city more than 1,700 years ago to preach Christianity. Saint Francis of Assisi preached here, and he made such an indelible impression on Dante that he included him in the Divine Comedy.

But most of all, San Leo is famous for its impressive fortress built on the edge of a cliff. It took a lot of effort to conquer such a fortress. Thousands and thousands of soldiers from various armies rest in unmarked graves at the foot of the citadel.

Since 1631, the city and fortress came under the direct control of the Holy See. The impregnable fortress was turned into a harsh prison for state criminals. It was in this fortress that the magician and healer, alchemist, founder and Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge of the Egyptian Rite, Count Alexander Cagliostro, spent the last years of his life. He was buried alive in a well-chamber that did not even have a door…

Friends, I invite you to touch the history of the city and the fortress, admire the nature of these places. Weekly trips as part of a mini-group of 5-8 people. Individual excursions are possible. Entrance fee to the fortress: 9 euros – adults, 5 euros – teenagers 14-18 years old, free – children under 14. Open every day from 10.30 to 18.00.

It is possible to combine it on the same day with an excursion to Rimini or San Marino.
